Governor Jay Inslee announced a statewide public health order on Tuesday. Starting this Friday, Washington State will require people to wear masks in public places in response to a surge in new coronavirus cases.
Masks are required throughout the state, effective Friday
The Public Health Order issued by the Minister of Health John Wiesman will take effect on Friday, June 6.The order requires people to cover their faces when they are in indoor public areas or when they cannot maintain a distance of 6 feet outdoors.
This move allowed Washington State to join the state camp that requires statewide implementation of mask orders, including California.
Viruses are active and cases are proliferating
The decision was made after the spread of the COVID-19 event in Huazhou increased. As of Tuesday,Washington State is one of the 25 states with higher incidence in the United States than last week.Inslee said: "Although we have made up our minds and made deliberate plans to reopen the economy, we are facing a highly active virus."
On Tuesday, Inslee highly praised wearing masks, "This kind of thing is not expensive, it is simple and easy to get, it allows us to work and enjoy life-in fact, it can save people's lives.
Inslee said at a press conference: "Before the vaccine was developed, "this will indeed be our best defense. "
He also reiterated that Washingtonians need to practice distance maintenance, wash their hands, undergo any tests for symptoms similar to COVID, and stay at home when they are sick.
These people do not wear it, Yakima is stricter
Yakima County has always been one of the most severely affected areas. According to another announcement issued by Inslee, its requirements will be stricter, and the announcement will also take effect on Friday.
As of Tuesday, Yakima County had at least 6,435 coronavirus cases, ranking second in the state and killed 142 people. The population of King County, including Seattle, has increased nearly 10 times, and at least 9,366 cases and 604 deaths have been recorded.

In these cases, you can wear a mask

  • People who are deaf or hearing impaired, and those with health conditions who cannot wear masks, are exempt.

  • Although the order recommends that children aged 3 to 5 years use face masks, considering the actual situation, children aged 5 years and younger can also be exempted.

  • People who are entertaining alone or with family members and those eating out in the restaurant do not need to wear masks as long as they maintain an appropriate distance from others.

Violation of order will constitute a crime
Several other jurisdictions (such as King County) have issued their own facial masking directives, or strongly urged residents to wear masks, although these districts stated that the focus of their efforts is more on education and there are no civil or criminal penalties for violators. Inslee said he hopes no need for any form of enforcement or sanctions.
But an Inslee spokesperson said,Violation of the state’s personal mask order is a minor offence and is punishable by 90 days’ imprisonment and a fine of $1,000.Violation of the Yakima County Business Statement is a serious misdemeanor and is punishable by 364 days in prison and a fine of $5,000. Inslee said that companies that do not comply with the regulations in Yakima County may lose their business licenses.
Statewide,More than 29,300 people were positive for the virus, and at least 1,284 people died. The virus causes mild to moderate symptoms in most patients, and the vast majority will recover. But it is extremely contagious and may cause serious illness and death in some patients, especially the elderly and patients with underlying diseases.
