According to recent analysis by SmartAsset, this figure requiresMinimum of US$27.5. Especially in expensive cities like San Francisco, the cost of living can be even higher.


SmartAssest's analysis defines "comfort" as having an income that covers a "50/30/20 budget," meaning spending 50% of a household's monthly income on essential items such as housing and utilities and 30% on discretionary expenses. Another 20% can be used for savings or investments.

Across all 99 cities surveyed, the median income a family of four needs to live comfortably is $226,886.


In large cities, housing costs often exceed 30% of household income, squeezing out spending on other necessities such as utilities, food and transportation. In order to make ends meet, some families may give up owning a home, owning a vehicle, or some discretionary spending.
